A leather area measuring machine measures the surface area of a hide or skin. This English edition translates Dalir’s short Persian educational article, originally published on 29 April 2016, with an editorial clarification of the units.
How the original article describes the machine
The source explains that natural leather is measured in the trade using a unit called “foot of leather” (pay-e charm). It describes digital factory measuring equipment as similar to a scanner and presents the demonstration video below. The original article identifies the machine as a product of Kardan Machine Manufacturing. It provides no model number, calibration record or numerical accuracy specification.
Clarifying “foot of leather” and square feet
The Persian text gives a historical definition of a leather-trade unit as a square measuring 32.99 × 32.99 cm, attributing it to a 1919 agreement between Italian and Spanish leather manufacturers. That historical attribution has not been independently verified here. It should not be read as the definition of the international square foot.
For standard unit conversion, 1 ft² = 0.09290304 m² = 929.0304 cm², equivalent to a square 30.48 cm on each side. See the NIST unit-conversion reference. A square of 32.99 × 32.99 cm instead has an area of about 0.108834 m². When comparing a measurement or quotation, ask which unit and conversion factor are being used.
Original demonstration video
The video is retained from the Persian source. An English audio track or subtitles have not been added.

Questions and answers
Does the machine measure thickness?
This article concerns surface area; it does not document a thickness measurement.
Is “foot of leather” always the same as ft²?
Do not assume so from the wording alone. Confirm the stated unit and conversion factor.
Who made the machine in the source?
The original Persian article names Kardan Machine Manufacturing.
