The new system of Eco Company

At the World Water Summit held in Tokyo, Japan in September 2018, Eco Leather Company introduced a model of Eco classic shoe called Soft 8, in which it used a new dry tanning system (Dritan). The material of this shoe was a material produced by Eco Leather Company using Dritan technology for its tanners. This technology makes it possible to make full use of the moisture in the leather itself and consume less water in the tanning process. This technology also reduces tanning wastewater and reduces the consumption of chemicals.Eco Company

Eco estimates that using Dritan technology in the company’s tannery in the Dutch city of Dongen will produce 600 tons less sludge per year. The technology is the result of five years of research and development aimed at reducing water consumption in tanning.Eco Company

“The study’s lead author, Thomas Gøgsig, says:

We used a lot of research, capital and manpower, and the biggest challenge was to increase our insight. The tanning industry is very old and traditional, which is why those involved forget to ask themselves if there is another way to do things.Eco Company

Fresh look

The Echo research team went to some of the proposed remedies for their previous processes and found that by using the specific tanning agents at their disposal, collagen could be preserved in the skin without any hydration. The group, led by Thomas Gøgsig, has gained a reputation in the leather industry from a new perspective by addressing old questions in leather. For example, most of the leather that Echo produces is chrome tanning, which Thomas Gøgsig says is a relatively tedious process, although vegetable tanning, which produces beautiful leathers, is like a rebellious horse that is difficult to control. It is troublesome to achieve the desired color of tanners.Eco Company

By combining the best of both systems, Echo turned to agents in tanning that combine aluminum and silicon.

Says Thomas Gøgsig:

This method is a direct achievement of our innovation laboratory and is not used by any company other than Echo. This method is actually a combination of the best hosts. Although it is free of chrome, it has chrome properties and it is possible to produce old and burnt old school leathers in this way. At the same time, very shiny leathers can be produced and pastel colors were used.

In-house production

Eco says that using Dritan technology can save up to 20 liters of water per processing of each skin volume, and because Dongen tannery currently processes 1.25 million volumes of skin per year, it can save 25 million liters per year in water consumption. Save. At first, this method is supposed to be used only in Dongen tannery, and then it will be used in eco tanneries in Indonesia, Thailand and China.Eco Company

Echo hopes to share this new technology with its partners and the entire tanning industry. Dritan is the first step in a broader ECO plan to remove water from the cherry-making process, which is a very ambitious goal. This process relies on resources and there is no need to invest in new equipment and there is no need to go for exotic chemicals. You just have to change the face.Eco Company

Innovation

According to the calculations of the Eco Leather Group, which relies on the figures of the Leather Working Group, the world leather industry consumes 400 billion liters of water a year to produce cow leather alone, or about 2,000 liters per skin volume. European tanners consume an average of about 600 liters of water to process each skin volume. In the European Union, to save 20 liters of water per skin volume, 3.3% of water consumption must be saved. Even if we consider the same global figure of 2,000 liters per skin volume, we can achieve a one percent saving with a ton, and one percent of 400 billion liters is equal to four billion liters per year.Eco Company

Global water scarcity is likely to put increasing pressure on many manufacturing industries and other aspects of daily life. The responsible response is that the leather industry continues to look for ways to reduce water consumption.Eco Company
