Final thickness and softness depend on processing.

Goat leather: Assess surface character, flexibility and the strength required for the product against a sample.

Sheep leather: For garments or soft products, assess thickness, handle and resistance appropriate to the use.

Ostrich leather: Follicle pattern, cutting areas, colour consistency and grading matter when specifying an order.

The species alone does not determine quality. Leathers from the same species may be designed for different products. Explore the Dalir natural leather shop for product enquiries.

Animal species, surface structure and finish are different categories

Cowhide or goat describes the source. Full grain and split refer to leather structure and layers. Aniline, pigmented and patent describe finishing characteristics. These terms should not be treated as a single classification.

Full grain: The natural grain has not been removed by corrective mechanical treatment.

Split leather: Made from the lower layers obtained by splitting the hide.

Nubuck and suede: Both have a nap, but nubuck is buffed on the grain side; suede is commonly made from split leather or the flesh side.

Embossed leather: A surface pattern has been produced by pressure. A crocodile or python pattern does not necessarily mean the material is made from that animal.

Read the leather industry glossary for terminology and explore leather printing and embossing samples.

An embossed python-pattern sample. The pattern name alone does not identify the base hide.

How does natural leather differ from synthetic materials?

Natural leather retains the fibrous structure of the hide or skin. Synthetic alternatives may use polymer coatings and backing layers. Bonded materials are made by binding leather particles or fibres. Ask for the material composition and layer structure in writing: a product described as “leather-like” is not enough to establish its composition.

Choosing leather for bags, footwear and belts

Application

What to assess

Bags

Body or drape, thickness, stitchability, lining and cutting waste

Footwear uppers

Flexibility, strength, colour fastness and behaviour during lasting

Belts

Thickness, resistance, stretch and single-layer or multilayer construction

Accessories

Piece sizes, edge finish, pattern and colour coordination with hardware

One fixed thickness will not suit every design. Usable cutting area, defect locations, thickness consistency, colour fastness and agreement between the sample and shipment affect actual manufacturing cost. A lower-priced hide with greater cutting waste may cost more per usable component.

Define the application and cutting pattern.

Approve the sample for colour, thickness, softness and appearance.

Agree on grading and usable area.

State the required tests and acceptance limits in the order.

Confirm quantity, area units, packaging and delivery terms.

Caring for leather

Cleaning must suit the finish. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and test products on a concealed area first. Avoid direct heat, unsuitable solvents and unnecessary soaking. Patent, suede and aniline leather do not all need the same treatment.

Frequently asked questions about leather

Is natural leather always waterproof?

No. Water resistance depends on the leather and its production process and must be checked for the intended application.

Can smell or burning prove that leather is genuine?

Neither is conclusive on its own.
